HI, I'M...

Stephanie Adams,

LPC-MHSP, PMH-C

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the states of Illinois and Tennessee and a Certified Perinatal Mental Health Clinician (PMH-C). I am also completing certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. I received my Master’s degree in Counseling with a specialization in Sport and Health Psychology from Adler University and have experience providing care across residential, outpatient private practice, and university settings.

At Matrescent Mind, my work centers on supporting women and birthing people through matrescence — the profound psychological, emotional, and identity transition into motherhood. This season of life can bring joy, grief, uncertainty, and growth all at once, and my goal is to provide a space where clients feel deeply understood, validated, and supported as they navigate this transformation.

I specialize in the treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, including anxiety, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, intrusive thoughts, trauma, and fear-based patterns that can emerge during pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenthood. I approach therapy collaboratively and holistically, working with each client to create a treatment plan that honors both their lived experience and their goals for healing and growth.

My clinical approach is grounded in evidence-based practices, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), while also integrating principles from sport and health psychology. These tools are especially helpful for individuals navigating periods of transition, bodily change, and heightened performance demands — whether that be childbirth, early parenting, or identity shifts related to motherhood. I also enjoy working with individuals who identify as athletes or active individuals as they adapt to changes in their bodies and routines during pregnancy and postpartum.

Reaching out for support can feel intimidating, particularly when fears or anxiety have been present for a long time. I believe that the act of seeking help is a meaningful first step toward change, and clients do not have to face this process alone. In therapy, we work together to build practical skills, increase resilience, and foster a renewed sense of confidence — supporting not only symptom relief, but long-term emotional wellbeing.

I strive to bring warmth, authenticity, and thoughtful humor into the therapeutic space, while maintaining a strong foundation in clinical integrity and compassion. My hope is that clients leave therapy with tools they can carry forward, a deeper understanding of themselves, and a greater sense of ease in their evolving identity.

What Does Therapy Look Like with You?

I believe therapy works best when there is both intention and flexibility. Together, we’ll create a clear plan that focuses on your goals and the symptoms or patterns that may be getting in the way of feeling present and connected in your life. Our work typically begins with getting to know you — your story, your background, and what brings you to therapy — so we can thoughtfully shape our approach moving forward.

As therapy progresses, sessions become more skill-focused and collaborative. We’ll work on understanding your experiences, practicing tools you’re open to learning, and applying those skills in ways that feel realistic and supportive of your daily life. Over time, many clients notice increased confidence, clarity, and a greater sense of steadiness as they navigate motherhood and identity changes.

While I value structure and evidence-based care, therapy doesn’t have to feel rigid or intimidating. I aim to create a space that feels warm, grounded, and genuine. I bring humor into the room when it’s helpful, and I also know when it’s time to slow down and focus deeply on the work at hand. My goal is to strike a balance — taking your healing seriously while honoring your humanity along the way.

And when you feel ready, we’ll talk about transitioning out of therapy in a way that feels thoughtful and empowering — not rushed. Therapy is about building skills and insight you can carry with you, long after our work together ends.

The challenges I enjoy treating most are...
